The National Risk Assessment Laboratory for Antimicrobial Resistance of Animal Original Bacteria was founded in 2014 by the National Development and Reform Commission and the Ministry of Agricultural, relying on the Laboratory of Veterinary Pharmacology, the Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Veterinary Pharmaceutics Development and Safety Evaluation, the National Reference Laboratory of Veterinary Drug Residues, National Safety Evaluation Laboratory for Veterinary Drugs (Environmental Ecology), and Guangdong veterinary drug innovation engineering technology research centre of universities and colleges. The laboratory aims at improving the theoretical and technical level of antimicrobial resistance assessment for animal original pathogen, accelerating the development of healthy livestock breeding, enhancing the trade competitiveness of animal food product, promoting China's research level and international academic status in this field.

Based on the national key discipline of Veterinary Medicine and the Guangdong provincial key discipline of Veterinary Pharmacology, the research group mainly focus on three research aspects, including antimicrobial resistance surveillance on relevant pathogens of food animal origin, resistance mechanism and molecular transfer of antimicrobial resistance genes, and research and development of novel antimicrobial agents used in animal. Based on the multi-crossed disciplines integrated with Veterinary Pharmacology, Veterinary Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, the research group focus on evaluating the risks of the development and spread of resistant bacteria on healthy food production, environment hygiene and public health at epidemiological and molecular level, elucidating the molecular mechanism of resistance development and spread in livestock involved relevant pathogens, and regulating mechanism of multi-drug resistant efflux, consequently development novel compound preparation/dosage form and efflux inhibitor aimed at resistant bacteria. Currently the research group have gained the advantages and characteristic features in molecular mechanism of horizontal transfer of resistance.

Professor Liu Yahong is the laboratory director, Professor Jiang Hongxia, Sun Yongxue, and Liu Jianhua are the vice laboratory directors. The laboratory has 26 fixed members, among which, 13 are professors/researchers, including one privileged professor of Yangtze River. Some fellows are awarded as National Outstanding Young Scientists of China, Young and Mid-aged Scientific and technological innovation leading talents by Ministry of Science and Technology. Some are selected talents by New Century Training Program Foundation for the Talents by the Ministry of Education, Thousand Hundred Ten Project of National level of Guangdong Province. The programmes for Ph.D degree and Master degree are a first-level discipline of Basic Veterinary Medicine. The laboratory possesses one mobile postdoctoral station.
